Hooke’s law (F = k e)

For a spring, force = spring constant × extension: F = k e. Extension is how much longer it gets (m); k is the spring constant (N/m).

How to do it — step by step

  1. extension = stretched length − natural length.
  2. F = k e. (Rearrange: k = F ÷ e, or e = F ÷ k.)

Worked example

A spring with k = 200 N/m is stretched 0.15 m.
F = 200 × 0.15 = 30 N
