Weight is the force of gravity on a mass: W = m g. Mass in kg, g is the gravitational field strength (≈ 9.8 N/kg on Earth), weight in newtons (N).

How to do it — step by step

  1. weight = mass × gravitational field strength.
  2. W = m g. (Rearrange: mass = weight ÷ g.)

Worked example

Weight of a 5 kg bag, g = 9.8 N/kg.
W = 5 × 9.8 = 49 N
